Improving Cross Country Skiing in Edmonton

The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Nordic Ski Club are dedicated to improving cross country skiing within the city.

Throughout 2014, operational, programming and public information and education approaches have been examined to ensure they are meeting the needs of residents.

For the 2014/15 ski season, we’ve made positive changes:

  • more efficient operations practices
  • refined grooming schedules based on weather, terrain, use patterns and operational needs
  • additional ski grooming and track-setting equipment
  • enhanced on-site signage

Connecting with you is an important part of this process. We need to know how you feel about these changes, and what you’d like to see. We invite you to be part of an online survey in February 2015. Watch for details here.

Edmonton area Athletes Compete at Sovereign Lake, BC

On Friday and Saturday, December 19th and 20th, three Edmonton area athletes are competing at the NorAm races being held at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre near Vernon, BC. Tate Macdonald, Luke Gerwing, and Anders Cowper arrived in Vernon late Wednesday evening in time to spend Thursday testing skis and reviewing the race courses. All three racers are part of the Capital Region Training Group (CRTG) which is racing in partnership with the Alberta World Cup Academy (AWCA) at most of the NorAm races this season. Tate Macdonald and Luke Gerwing are both representing Edmonton Nordic Ski Club and Anders Cowper is representing St. Albert Nordic Ski Club. Also racing with them on this joint AWCA/CRTG team are many of the seasoned senior level racers from the AWCA. On Friday the racers will be facing off in a Classic Sprint race and on Saturday they will push the pace in a distance Skate race. Coaches supporting the crew include Chris Jeffries, Stefan Kuhn, Ian Murray, and Glen Cowper.

Follow the results at Zone4.ca OR check the Capital Region Training Group Facebook Group for regular updates OR go to the Alberta World Cup Academy website for notices there.

All other CRTG athletes including Ingvild Høymork (ENSC), Sara Tipples (ENSC), Silas Lang (ENSC), Larkin Wasmuth (Fort Saskatchewan Nordic), Lukas Mark (Edson Muskeg Flyers), and Tomas Mark (Edson Muskeg Flyers) are competing at the Alberta Cups being held at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre on Saturday and Sunday.

Good luck to all these racers and to all the other ski racers taking part and pushing the, selves to their limits!
