Biathlon is any combination of an endurance sport and small bore rifle shooting. In Edmonton, we combine shooting with skiing, running, and mountain biking to provide a variety of year-round activities.
Biathlon Bears begins at the beginning. All participants will learn the basic shooting skills required to compete in a Biathlon competition. The program uses high-end air rifles to teach shooting. For athletes aged 9-12, these are the rifles they would use in a provincial competition, like a Calforex Cup. For older beginners, the air rifles are an instructional stepping stone to the firearms used in traditional Winter Olympic Biathlon.
Summer and Fall programs combine running and biking with shooting. Winter programs are on-snow and combine skiing and shooting. Biathletes are strongly encouraged to participate in other ENSC programs designed to improve endurance (Summer programs) and ski skills (Winter programs like Jackrabbits or Lynx).
Participants are strongly encouraged to participate in non-Nordic sports to develop athletic abilities and the ability to work in teams.
Program Objectives:
- Master the fundamental skills of Biathlon shooting
- improve athletic ability
- improve endurance (aerobic) performance
- Begin to master shooting under competition conditions
