Equipment Requirements

We recommend that all Lynx have both classic and skate skis (if possible), or combi skis.  If attending out of town races separate classic and skate skis are highly recommended.  Specific classic and skate poles are required – the boots can be combi boots.

Program Contribution

Parents are expected to contribute to the seasons activities.  These contributions can include:

  • Coaching – work toward community coaching certification and higher
  • Photographers and videographers
  • Safety – taking care of those who may be cold etc.
  • Special events organization – program and social events

Lynx is a youth development program aimed at "becoming technically competent while exploring a wide range of adventure based cross-country ski activities”.   Lynx program is offered to children aged 9-12.  It is meant to follow Jackrabbits in a skill development progression, aligning with the "Learning to Train" stage of Sport Canada's Long Term Athlete Development plan.

Children involved in this program attend 'practices' where they practice skiing skills. 'Training' is a concept that children are introduced to as part of practice. Children will also be introduced to concepts and skills involving touring, off-track and backcountry skiing e.g. route finding, navigation, decision-making, safety considerations, etc. Children may also be introduced to basic elements of telemark skiing.

Program Objectives:

  • Lynx will participate in an athlete development program, a once a week, on-snow session that coincides with the Sunday Jackrabbit program.
  • Realizing the significant motor skill developmental window that exists at this age, Lynx is designed to teach age appropriate technique proficiency in skating and classic.
  • Development of agility, quickness, and directional change will be developed through participation in a variety of activities and events.
  • Create a positive team environment and build strong friendships.
  • Keeping a focus on fun and play is key to engaging and retaining children at this age. A focus on fun and play does not preclude participation in competitive events.  Lynx will have ample opportunities at practices and races to participate in activities that are fun and engaging that build individual resilience and character while respecting individual differences and preferences.
