Our Edmonton Nordic racing program has produced some of the best Cross Country Skiers and Biathletes in Canada:
- Madeleine Williams was Canada's top distance skier at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. We are especially proud of Madeleine in her pursuit of excellence as an elite student-athlete, who was able to balance academics and athletics to recently graduate from Athabasca University with Academic Distinction.
- Madeleine has followed in the ski tracks of Edmonton Nordic's trail blazers Jamie and Amanda Fortier, our skiing sisters, who competed in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics (Jaime also competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan). Both Jamie and Amanda were elite student-athletes who managed to balance university studies and Olympic training, en route to professional careers.
- Claire Critchley competed for Canada at the 2000 World Junior Championships and then chose to race on an NCAA student-athlete scholarship at the Universtiy of Colorado, as an NCAA All-American and All-Academic.
- Amanda Ammar, Edmonton's most recent Olympian, competed in the 2006 Turino, Italy Olympics as our youngest junior-aged 19 year old athlete, and now lives in Canmore where she is pursuing her studies.
- Jaime Robb represented Edmonton Nordic as a member of Canada's National Biathlon Team for the past six years; has competed at many World Cup races; and was an "alternate" for our Biathlon Men's Relay Team at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He is continuing his studies in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia.
- Former National Ski Team Member, Tara Whitten, silver medallist at the 2003 World Under 23 Cross Country Ski Championships, crossed over from skiing to cycling, to win 2 Gold Medals at the 2010 World Cycling Championships, while completing her Masters studies at the University of Alberta. This past October, Tara was chosen to be Canada's Flag Bearer at the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, because of her 4 medal podium performances in cycling. All eyes are on Tara as she prepares for the cycling podium at the London 2012 Olympics!
New Athletes from other sports are always welcome to join our team and learn to ski race! For information about our racing programs, contact our Head Coach Les Parsons lesparsonsgreen AT yahoo.ca or 780-691-6912.
