Northern Alberta Skiers Guide

Edmonton Nordic recreational skiing co-ordinator Mike Stern has created an ever-growing guide to the best cross country skiing has to offer. Each guide features extensive information on the trails, as well as directions and resources for more information. He has also added his own extensive knowledge of the trails to provide insight on exactly what to do to maximize your day!

Download each guide and print it off as a handy double-sided page (adobe acrobat reader required - download here). Stay tuned for more updates throughout the winter!

A Message from author, Mike Stern:

Current Trail Guides

In this section are articles on different ski areas around Edmonton.  Most of these areas are within one to two hours drive of Edmonton.  These articles first appeared in the Troll Tracks newsletter.  If you want to print them off for reference they are designed to fit on both sides of a piece of paper.

In these articles I will first cover the essentials on each ski area such as length & nature of the trail system, how far it is from the city and how to get there etc.  Then, I will add my “two skis (cents) worth” of personal comments on the area.   I have tried to be as accurate as possible, but please if you spot any mistakes let me know so that I can update them.   Also in each of these articles is information on how to obtain maps on the individual trail systems.

I hope eventually to cover the following areas, St Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Tawatinaw, Chickakoo Lake, Drayton Valley, Edson, Camrose, Red Deer, Strathcona Wilderness Centre, Blackfoot, Elk Island.

Some of these areas are provincially or municipally owned and are looked after by the various authorities.  Others are managed and looked after by volunteers from the local Nordic club.   A few charge a small fee for using the trail system.   I have found that it is good PR to give a small donation to those trail systems run by local volunteers, particularly when the grooming is good.

Happy skiing!
