ENSC's programs for adults and kids would not be possible without our many instructors. We always need new people - please consider joining this important part of our club.

We asked a few of our experienced instructors for items that newer instructors will need to know. Here, in no particular order, is the list.

TRAINING

  • Instructors need to have their CANSI qualification and to be current members of CANSI and of ENSC. This gives them the insurance coverage if there should be an accident.
  • The club will pay for instructor ski and primary first aid training on the condition that a 2 year commitment to instructing is made.

LESSON PLANNING

  • Lessons should be effective i.e. all students come in with a skill set and expectations and it is up to the instructor to meet or exceed the student's goals.
  • Lessons should be safe, fun, snappy with plenty of skiing
  • Instructors should have a daily lesson plan and progression in mind for each student
  • The instructor should be able to break down the complex ski techniques into component parts for easy learning; he or she should then be able to pull it all together for the students.
  • All students should be treated with respect and should be able to progress at their own rate.

PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Ensure that you have a class list with everyone’s email or phone number. Conditions can change quickly, and people always want to be kept in the picture – especially if there is likely to be a cancellation/rescheduling.
  • Instructors should carry a cell phone or walkie talkie when teaching and have the contact of at least one other instructor or coach teaching at the same time, preferably a person who has the key to the shed with the evacuation sled. This will ensure that they could get help in an emergency.

WEATHER

  • We don’t generally cancel sessions due to weather. Postponing or rescheduling classes is a possibility in the event of severely inclement conditions. Wherever possible, this should by consensus, but often the cancellation has to be made on the day and it is the instructor's call. Rescheduled classes should of course meet with general agreement, so that nobody feels that they were unable to get the full lesson programme.

PAYMENT

  • Instructors for adult lessons are paid an hourly rate based on qualification, and that payment is usually a lump sum at the conclusion of the lesson programme for the season.
