Our Amazing Volunteers - The Heart of Our Jackrabbit Program:
Our program wouldn’t be possible without our incredible volunteers! A huge THANK YOU to all the parents, grandparents, youth racers, and young adults who dedicate their time to making this program so special. As our young skiers grow, so do our volunteer opportunities! We do ask that all families find a way to volunteer with the club - whether it is timing a cookie race, providing hot chocolate or coaching.. everything is welcome and greatly appreciated.
Want to join our amazing team of coaches? We offer training through NCCP which is a fantastic way to boost your skiing and coaching skills. If you know anyone who loves having fun in the snow with kids, tell them to get in touch with our Jackrabbit Coordinator (jackrabbits@edmontonnordic.ca)!
Equipment & Clothing:
Parents/guardians provide equipment for participants. Edmonton Nordic is proud to offer a seasonal ski rental program to our Jackrabbit families (see below). All children will begin with classic ski equipment and transition to skate technique as skills progress. (Note: “classic” skis are for use in ski tracks for striding, whereas “skate” equipment is for use on the flattened portion of the trail, beside the track, where skier pushes with the feet in “V” pattern.)
Jackrabbits should always dress in layers to help adjust for physical activity levels and should come prepared for all weather. Clothing items include: neck tubes/buffs; warm toque, well-insulated mittens, and winter (not cotton) socks with extras for after the session. Fanny packs with water and a snack are encouraged. As a child advances through the Jackrabbit programming ensuring that they have access to wicking non-cotton base layers becomes more critical. If you are unsure how to dress your Jackrabbit for cross country skiing please do not hesitate to reach out to your coach or our program coordinator. Families wishing to have their Jackrabbit participate in loppets, Barnebirkie, or cross country ski races are encouraged to consider purchasing club clothing at the beginning of the season (more info coming soon).
Rental Equipment:
Edmonton Nordic is proud to be able to support families needing equipment through our rental equipment program. Through this program we are able to provide families the opportunity to rent a seasonal ski package that can be used both during lessons as well as on your own time. This program is offered in partnership with Fast Trax. All registered families will receive an email early November regarding equipment rental pick up. The cost of this program for winter 2026 - 2027 will be announced shortly (roughly $100).
Required Equipment:
Bunnies & Level 1
A child’s first set of ski equipment set should include a pair of classic no-wax skis (fish scales or skins) with a pair of cross country ski specific boots.
Initial on-snow adventures do not require long skis. Skis should be approximately the same height as the skier. It is better for the child to outgrow their skis than to grow into them.
Bindings should be NNN or SNS with matching boots. Older style skis may be permitted for this stage, please check in with us beforehand.
No poles are required for the Bunnies or level one programs.
Level 2
At this stage Jackrabbits have basic control on cross country skis and are striving towards more efficient movement and better technique. As such we are looking for equipment selection that supports efficiency and proper technique.
Skis: Skinned skis at this stage are preferred but waxed skis may be used. Skis should be sized based on a combination of both weight and height.
Bindings: NNN or SNS with matching boots.
Poles will be introduced part way through the winter. Poles should be “classic” length meaning that with the pole tips in the snow, the poles should tightly fit under the armpit.
Level 3
Children will be introduced to skate skiing while continuing to progress in classic ski technique. However, separate skate ski equipment is not yet required.
Option 1: classic waxed skis, boots, and poles (recommended for most youth)
For classic technique sessions, the kick zone must be in place and grip wax would be applied.
For skating technique sessions, the grip wax must be removed from the kick zone and the entire length of the ski prepared with glide wax
Option 2: Families that feel that their child’s future involvement in the sport warrants an investment may choose to buy both classic and skate ski equipment at this stage.
Level 4
Option 1: This option is recommended for most families. Removal and addition of waxes is required the same as level 3.
Classic waxed skis (NNN or SNS bindings)
Classic Poles (should fit snugly underneath armpits or slightly above)
Skate Poles (should be sized up to the chin)
Classic or Combi Boots
Option 2: Families that feel that their child’s future involvement in the sport warrants an investment may choose to buy both classic and skate ski equipment at this stage.
Where to Purchase Equipment:
Parents are encouraged to buy suitable equipment for their children for two main reasons:
it is an investment in a positive, fun learning experience
good equipment retains its re-sale value – someone will always buy it when you are finished with it.
Retailers in the Edmonton area that sell ski equipment include:
Track ‘n Trail
Totem Outfitters (used equipment may be available)
Mountain Equipment Co-Op
Fast Trax
Several of these stores offer discounts to Edmonton Nordic members – be sure to ask!
Used equipment is sometimes available at the Edmonton Nordic Ski Swap, held annually; however, the selection is usually limited. Families may also have success finding second hand equipment on Facebook Marketplace.
